October Favorites (2014)

Hello!  I wanted to share my October favorites of the month and hopefully make it a regular thing.  I enjoy watching YouTubers and catching up with what other bloggers are loving every month.  Not only that, I find it helpful!  They give me options for new things to try or help me narrow down something I have been needing.  The only downside is that it makes me want to shop more, but I am working hard on controlling that.  On to my favorites…

DIY Manicure & Friday Sunnah

Friday is a special day for Muslims all around the world.  All Muslims congregate together for a mid-day prayer called Salatul Jummah (the Friday prayer) which consists of a khutbah (short sermon) and salah (prayer).  As is the case with any special day, you prepare for it by taking care of your body, dressing up nicely, and looking your best.  Therefore, grooming oneself before the prayer is part of the sunnah (practice of the Prophet Mohammad peace be upon him).

One of the sunnahs in preparation for Jummah is the cutting of nails.  This is where sunnah and beauty meets for me — I try to hold off on my manicures and pedicures until Thursday night or Friday to fulfill the sunnah.

Here are the steps for a do-it-yourself at home manicure:

  • Trim your nails.  Cut your nails to your desired length.  Personally, I like to keep mine short.
  • File to desired shape.  File your nails to the desired shape.  A popular shape is flat on top with rounded edges.  For nail shapes and descriptions, click here.

  • Buff.  Using a nail buffer, buff out the fringed edges and tops of your nails.
  • Soak in soapy water.  Soak your hands in warm water with soap to soften your cuticles for a few minutes.  Dry when done.
  • Use a cuticle remover.  Spread cuticle remover cream/lotion (can be purchased at any local drugstore) over your cuticles as directed on packaging.

  • Push back cuticles.  Use a soft wooden cuticle stick (can be purchased at any local drugstore) to push back your cuticles.  It is not recommended you use a cuticle cutter.  This can cause infections and should only be used by professionals.  Rinse your hands and dry.

  • Polish nails.   The polish section is the softest section of your buffer.  I save this for later when my nails are all clean.  Polish your nails until they look shiny.
  •  Apply oil and moisturize.  Apply cuticle and nail oil on your nails and rub in.  You should do this every night before bed to keep your nails healthy.  Moisturize your nails and hands with lotion.

First Impressions of Clarisonic MIA 2

I purchased and received my Clarisonic MIA 2 a little less than a week ago.  Since then, I have been using it twice a day in the mornings and at night before bed for one minute as recommended in the instructions.

What the Clarisonic does?

It is a new technological system to cleanse your face.  It uses sonic frequency of more than 300 movements per second providing better cleansing and exfoliating results than manual washing with hands or the use of face towels.  It claims to do a more thorough job at cleaning off the dirt and make-up clogging up your pores leaving you with healthier, radiant, and smooth skin.  For more information, visit their site here.

What do I think?

I am in love.  I was a little hesitant to make this investment because I thought it may be too much work, but I actually look forward to it.  It is as if I am getting the perk of being at a salon without actually having to go there.

I rarely breakout and if I do it is usually concentrated in my chin area due to hormones.  With your hormones all over the place during pregnancy, it is only expected that your skin will act up.  The other day I broke out all over my forehead which is what prompted me to make the purchase to begin with.  Unfortunately, my breakouts tend to leave brown spots/scars.

The Clarisonic helped clear up my skin faster than it normally would with my usual skincare routine.  My face feels soft and smooth with a natural glow to it.  The scarring from my breakouts seem to be fading away quickly.

Another additional benefit is that you do not have to use the Clarisonic cleanser with it.  You can use your normal favorite cleanser and it will work just as well if not better.

Why I think it is important?

For healthy skin, I cannot stress enough how important it is to wash your face!  Throughout the day, oil and dirt builds up on our faces clogging our pores and making our skin dull.  Therefore, it is very important to cleanse your skin everyday and exfoliate a few times a week.  A very good article, Wash Your Damn Face Already!, from youbeauty.com explains the importance of cleansing and exfoliating your face.

What to keep in mind?

The Clarisonic is not a cheap purchase.  I read through tons of positive and negative reviews.  It seems that the Clarisonic, as is the case with many skincare products, works very well for some people or the exact opposite for others.  My suggestion is to thoroughly read through the return/exchange policy before you make the purchase.

The other thing to keep in mind is the recommended usage.  Although the directions say it is safe to be used twice a day, I noticed a number of dermatologists and beauticians recommend it only be used 2-3 times a week.  Since the Clarisonic is so effective, too much exfoliation is not a good thing either because it can strip your skin of its natural oils.  Your skin needs time to recover and recuperate.  For this reason, I have decided I will incorporate it into my normal skincare routine 2-3 times a week rather than twice daily.

Where to purchase?

I have seen the Clarisonic in most department stores such as Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s.  However, I have never seen it go on sale or been able to use coupons with it both in store or online.  That is why it took me so long to buy it.

I did however find this website called SkinStore.com.  It allows you to use their coupon codes with the Clarisonic and gives you free shipping as well.  Win-win!  It is such an easy site to use and I was impressed by how quickly it came, within 2-3 business days.  If you use billmelater.com (linked with PayPal), you can get cashback on top of it.  I did contact the site to see if I can get a discount code for all of you out there!

What’s next?

I will start using it every other day and report back to all of you after a month with a full review.
